mi viaje a londres, my trip to london (day 1)

Finally going to start writing about my trip to London!!  I have always always wanted to go to London (Londres en espanol) and still can't believe I finally made it happen!  It's actually kinda a funny story how it came about, because I had decided that I wasn't going to be able to travel out of Spain because I didn't really have time, but me and Amber started talking one day and thought we might have a little break between our two sessions of classes (but we weren't sure) and maybe we should travel somewhere.  Four hours later, we had bought our plane tickets (and this was all two weeks before we left).  It was really a spur of the moment decision, but the prices for flights on ryanair (the cheap airline here) change so randomly, we wanted to buy them while they were still cheap.  We booked our hostel the next day and we were set!  We actually made out a whole itinerary and everything (which we followed pretty closely).
We ran into a slight problem after getting to the airport...basically we're idiots and did not leave ourselves nearly enough time to get on our flight/go thru security/and all the other things you have to do with ryanair...and had to sprint through the entire airport to make it onto our flight.  We literally got on the plane 5 minutes before take off.   This is what we looked like after our run....(warning: not pretty!)

After arriving in London, things went better!  The airport we flew into is about an hour out of London so you have to take a bus into the city, which we found easily and got tickets for (you'd be surprised how easy it is to get around after you realize you can speak english, and they can speak english and all  is understood between you).  Once we got into London we had no idea how to get to our hostel.  Our information gave us directions but they just started at a random point that we had no clue where it was or anything.  Again, we asked for directions, and took the underground to where the directions started and found it with out too much trouble (ok we had to ask for directions a few more times because it told  us to go one way when we really should have went the other way).  Our hostel was pretty...well...nice isn't the right word, but safe and clean enough....Here's a picture of our beds and the room....

sorry its sideways but our beds. (amber had the bottom and i had the middle).  these beds were soooo comfortable.

After getting settled into our hostel, we did a little touring.  We had to take a bus to get closer to well..anything (our hostel was pretty far away from everything).  The first night we stayed close by and checked out the Tate Modern museum.  Most of their museums are free, so we just looked around for awhile.  It had a lot of very interesting/very modern type art.  I always like to look at it but I know I don't appreciate it the way some people would...a lot of it I just think is silly and don't understand why its in a museum, but oh well.  We also walked past the Globe theater but didn't every actually tour it because it was a pretty expensive tour!  We wanted to go see a production there, but none were showing the nights we were there.  We walked along the river for awhile and enjoyed the view and watching all the people (and listening to their accents!).  We went  back to the hostel fairly early so we could get up early the next day and check out the city!

another cool bridge.

sideways, again.

huh...another bridge.
Sorry no cameras were allowed in the museum!  The coolest thing though was this gigantic pile of sunflower seeds. At first i thought it was a giant pile of gravel and I was like...this would be int his museum...then it was sunflower seeds and I still thought it was lame until I read about it and each one of the seeds was made of ceramic, and there was literally millions and millions of seeds, so it was pretty impressive.

Our first night sleeping in the hostel went well!  Except for when the girl that was sleeping on the bunk above me had to crawl over me to get into her bed and she turned off my light for me (I was still awake!).  But all in all it wasn't too bad.
I will write more soon, but me and Amber have a mountain to go climb right now!

  1. "We wanted to go see a production there, but none were showing the nights we were there."

That's a pity. If you get a chance to go again, definitely take it. Although make sure you rent a cushion. Belive me, it's worth the money.

The Globe is one of my favourite places to go in London, although Covent Garden has the top spot. I'd like to go to the Globe again soon, I'll have to keep an eye on what's going to be on. A few years back, I booked into serviced apartments London with a few friends and we went to the Globe. And last December, my mum and I had a weekend in Covent Garden. Once you find a place in London that you truly love, you'll want to go back again and again.
